When my wife was pregnant with our first child, I, like many first-time parents, struggled to imagine who my child would be and what we would do together. But I did know there would be late nights, and midnights, and early morning nights. Lullaby and Goodnight was written while imagining the still darkness and the intimacy of holding a wakeful child. The composition can be divided into two parts. The first is a lullaby meant to coax a child to sleep and the second section, starting with the flugelhorn solo, accompanies the child into the realm of dreams.
