Invisible was composed while reflecting on the immense loss of civilian life caused by American wars and drone strikes in the Middle East after 9/11. Azmat Khan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for the New York Times, detailed how American drone strikes were “marked by deeply flawed intelligence, rushed and often imprecise targeting, and the deaths of thousands of civilians, many of them children.” The Watson Institute at Brown University estimates that since 2001 more than 387,000 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere by American forces. The US has not taken accountability or even fully acknowledged responsibility for the terror and violence visited on innocent civilian life in these sovereign nations. This piece is a lament for the lives of all who are seemingly invisible to great military powers.
