The harmonic sketch for Fraught Hope Blues emerged on January 6, 2021. I was at my desk focused on a different project when the news from the Capitol started to stream in. I was pulled between my computer–absorbing the updates–and the piano, using music to process the disturbing images of a mob, directed by the President, storming the Capitol to overturn the results of the 2020 election. That day I realized that democratic elections are not inevitable in America. That is a naïve hope. Trusting the American people and those in power to act with integrity and embrace the peaceful transition of power is a fraught hope.
